Modified 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid Sets New Speed Record for Hybrids at Bonneville Salt Flats at 185mph

Friday, August 17, 2012

With the slightly misleading title "VOLKSWAGEN'S JETTA HYBRID IS THE WORLDS FASTEST HYBRID", the German automaker informed us today about a new speed record achieved by a specially prepped Jetta Hybrid sedan driven by Motor Trend magazine writer Carlos Lago at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

We say 'misleading' because it gives the impression that the hybrid speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats was made by the same 2013 Jetta Hybrid saloon that you will soon be able to park under your garage, which obviously, is not the case as VW itself reveals further down in its press release.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta Alltrack Rendered for Your Speculative Pleasure

Monday, June 11, 2012

Not too long after Volkswagen officials admitted that they are warming up to the idea of a Jetta Alltrack crossover built around the successor of the current Jetta SportWagen (estate), and we have our first speculative take on the high-riding station wagon model, courtesy of Khalil Bouguerra.

Naturally, the inspiration for the Jetta Alltrack comes from the existing, European market Passat Alltrack.

The artist used the latest Jetta sedan as a base, initially transforming the car into to a station wagon model and then beefing up the body with all the usual soft-roader fare.

These include the front and rear underbody metal skid plates, chromed roof rails, plastic cladding around the bumpers, wheel arches and side sills along with a new set of alloy wheel designs.

Volkswagen Promotes Jetta's Solid Door Thunk and Passat's Safety Credentials in New Ads

Monday, May 7, 2012

At some point or another, most German automakers have advertised the fact that their vehicles' doors close with a solid "thump" as a sign of quality engineering – which through the years may or may not be accompanied by numerous other sounds such as falling windows, but that is another story.

Volkswagen is the latest company to promote this aspect through a humorous commercial for its Jetta compact sedan in the States.

The German carmaker also released a separate ad to highlight the U.S.-made 2012 Passat's safety ratings from the IIHS, called 'Crash' featuring a young man who just smashed his father's car. You can watch both ads in the videos after the break.

Volkswagen Jetta CC Highly Unlikely to be Sold in North America, Say Sources

Monday, April 30, 2012

Last month, it was reported that Volkswagen is mulling the development of a sporty looking compact sedan in the likes of the Passat CC (pictured above) based on the running gear of the next Jetta saloon.

Today we learn via a new report from Car&Driver magazine that even though Volkswagen's top brass is positive about the idea and could soon reach a final decision, company sources from Europe reportedly said, "It is highly unlikely that the car will make it to U.S. dealers".

2001 VW Jetta 1.8T Receives an Autopsy After Hitting the 500,000 Mile Mark

Thursday, April 26, 2012

While covering 500,000 miles (804,500 kilometers) with the same engine is not something unheard of these days, it is not common either. Welcome to the world of Matt Marion, deputy editor at Men’s Health magazine, who recently hit the half-million mile mark with his 2001 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T.

Marion began blogging about his car on a dedicated section at Men’s Health website called "The Half-Million Mile Man" on March 2010, when his turbocharged Jetta reached 400,000 miles (643,000 km). The purpose was to detail his efforts to reach the half million-a-mile landmark.

“The purpose of my blog ‘The Half-Million Mile Man’ was not only to chronicle my journey toward 500,000 miles, but also to share what I learned along the way about automotive maintenance with other drivers,” Marion explains. “When I neared 500K, I realized that the most valuable lessons of all were probably hiding inside the Jetta’s engine.”

VW Reportedly Developing a Smaller CC Model Based on the Next Jetta

Friday, March 16, 2012

A four-door sedan is a four-door sedan regardless of the height and styling of the roof but automakers had to find some way to market their sportier looking saloons so they coined the somewhat ambiguous term "four-door coupe".

Among the many cars to sprout from this sub-segment are Audi's A5 and A7 Sportback models, BMW’s 6-Series Gran Coupe and of course, the founding Mercedes-Benz CLS.

In all cases, form takes priority over function as these saloons are merely more stylish and more often than not, less spacious and practical versions of the regular four-door models they are based on.

VW was the first mainstream manufacturer to introduce a four-door coupe with the Passat CC, which after its recent facelift, goes by the name of CC. Now the German carmaker plans to add a second, smaller model to its line-up of sporty sedans.

Rumors: VW's 2.5L Inline-Five to be Replaced with New 1.8-liter Turbo in the U.S.

Sunday, November 20, 2011

With such a large arsenal of turbocharged gasoline engines in all sorts of sizes and states of tune, one could only wonder why Volkswagen is still holding on to the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-five in the States – especially since even GM and Ford have gone ahead and introduced smaller displacement force-fed fours.

It appears that VW also believes it's time to replace the old-school five-pot with a more modern turbocharged four. Citing two sources from within the German company, Car&Driver reports that the 2.5L unit will soon be dropped from Volkswagen's U.S. range with a new 1.8-liter TSI four-cylinder engine taking its place.
