After a gazillion different design concepts of any vehicle you can think of, the fad passed and we all moved on, or so we thought, as someone over at Toyota's racing and performance partner Gazoo recently had a moment of zen giving it another go.

Toyota-owned Daihatsu has released initial details on a new small concept model named the D-X. What's interesting about the study is that, according to the Japanese maker, it can easily be transformed into four different type of vehicles simply by swapping out parts of its resin-based body.
These include a roadster, a shooting-break-like hatchback, a two-door crossover and a track-racer.
In standard roadster form, the Daihatsu D-X concepts measures 3,395mm long, 1,475mm wide and 1,275mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,230mm.

Daihatsu says that it has overhauled all existing aspects of the engine, the transmission, and the body structure, to make the most of energy efficiency and as a result, says that the Mira e:S is almost 40 percent more fuel efficient that current mini cars with engine displacements of up to 660 cc [0.6-liter].

The cosmetic treatment begins with a special matte white paint job for the body and black finish for the roof that costs €5,500 and continues with a full bodykit that includes headlight covers, side skirts and wheel arch extensions (€448), rear bumper with an integrated diffuser and two large tail pipes (€448) and front bumper fascia with day-time lights (€230).

As if Toyota's affiliate Daihatsu wasn't enough unpopular with male consumers, the company that is known for the most part for its small kei- and city- cars introduced the Mira Cocoa at the 2009 Tokyo Show. The delightfully tiny hatch targets female buyers with its near cartoonish appearance inside and out. Seen by many as a modern-day Fiat 500 Jolli with a Japanese twist in it, the Basket is one of four new concept models unveiled by Daihatsu at the Tokyo Motor Show. The 3,395 mm long canvas-top Basket is based on the JDM Mira matching a 600cc 3-cylinder gasoline engine to a four-wheel drive system. Seating up to four people, the Basket's rear seats can be folded down turning the car into a miniature pick-up with a completely flat bed.
