Hyundai in Shock as Toyota Camry Wins 2013 "Korea Car of the Year" Award

Until recently, South Korea had a taxing policy that made importing cars nigh impossible. It was a means to protect its homegrown automakers, of course, i.e. Hyundai and Kia, from foreign competition. Now, though, it has opened its doors to foreigners, which is fair, as the Koreans face no such restrictions in regions such as North America, Europe or Asia.

Toyota, for one, only entered the South Korean market in 2010. In 2011, it managed to shift 5,020 vehicles. Last year, it more than doubled that number, to 10,795 and, despite the strong competition from German rivals, increased its market share from 4.78 to 8.25 percent.

Since we are approaching the launch date of the new Toyota Proace in Europe, the Japanese carmaker decided to release a fresh set of images of its commercial and passenger van series that replaces the Hiace.

If the van's appearance looks eerily familiar, it is because Toyota entered an OEM agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroën to rebadge its Citroen Jumpy and Peugeot Expert models. There's also a fourth variant of the series produced by Fiat and named the Scudo.

DAMD's Lexus LFT-86 is a Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S in Disguise [w/Video]

Even if you wanted to, you can't ignore all the customized and conceptual Toyota 86 sport coupes that are on display at this week's Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan.

We don't know whether Toyota should worry, but a great number of tuners focused their efforts on altering the appearance of the rear-wheel drive coupe that's marketed as the Toyota GT 86 outside of Japan and the Scion FR-S in North America.

While the students at NATS gave the 86 an Audi R8-esque look and Toyota's own Original Accessory sub-brand a classic feel, the always-imaginative crew from Japan's DAMD decided to turn their 86 into a mini-me Lexus LFA calling it the LFT-86.

The cosmetic transformation begins with a new front end that keeps the 86's headlamps but adds a newly styled bumper that mimics the LFA with triangular-shaped side vents, and continues with the side skirts.

Toyota Prius and Lexus HS 250h Class-Action Lawsuit Dismissed by California Court

Friday, January 11, 2013

If there’s one thing Toyota has in abundance in the U.S., apart from sales and models, it is lawsuits. This time, though, the Japanese automaker scored a victory as U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney in California denied a class-action lawsuit by owners of Prius and Lexus models.

More specifically, the judge denied four car owners’ request to represent other owners of 2010 Prius and Lexus HS 250h models in California over a 2010 recall for a software upgrade that fixed an issue with the cars’ ABS system.

Three More Bespoke Toyota 86 Concepts from Modellista, TRD and Tom's

The Toyota 86, aka Scion FR-S in the U.S. and GT 86 outside Japan, is a hot item, especially in its home country. Gazoo Racing has very close ties with Toyota, so launching several concepts in cooperation with other tuners at the Tokyo Auto Salon was pretty much to be expected.

We'll begin with the 86 Modellista, which is all about the looks. Gazoo Racing says that the theme was developing a “futuristic sophisticated” concept.

Toyota Breaths Some Sportiness into the Prius C with Aqua G Sports Concept

Let's face it; the Prius C's looks are about as interesting as a corn on the cob. Nevertheless, Toyota believes it can add some character to its sub-compact hybrid with a new concept that was introduced today at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

The G Sports version of the Aqua, which is what Toyota calls the Prius C in its home market of Japan, retains the standard model's full hybrid powertrain adding numerous  styling bits and a re-tuned suspension into the mix.

That's NATS! Japanese Students Turn Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S into an Audi R8 Lookalike

Ah, the creative minds from Japan's Nihon Automobile College (NATS) are back again to surprise us in more ways than one with their work at this week's 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The creators of unusual concepts such as the kei-car version of the Honda NSX back in 2007, took the most popular car of this year's show, the Toyota 86, and turned it into something that resembles an Audi R8, which they then called the R86.

Tokyo Auto Salon: Toyota Mark X G Sports Carbon Roof Concept [w/Video]

A host of 86 (Scion FR-S) coupe models marks Toyota's presence at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2013, but the Japanese carmaker also prepared several other models including a prototype of its recently updated Mark X G Sports sedan.

As the name implies, the Mark X G Sports Carbon Roof Concept trades the regular model's steel roof for lightweight carbon fibre top, which Toyota says reduces body weight and increases driving performance.

Meet the Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S GRMN SPORTS FR Concept PLATINUM [w/Video]

To be frank, Toyota got it right the first time with the original concepts for the 86 and the FR-S, but for one reason or another, it toned down the design of both models when time came to introduce the production variants.

While no doubt a success, many people have also complained about the lack of power from the Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter naturally aspirated flat four that generates 200-horses.

Toyota's racing and tuning partner Gazoo Racing is looking to rectify both issues with a new concept unveiled today at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2013 named the 'GRMN SPORTS FR Concept PLATINUM'.

On the styling front, Gazoo Racing devised a new front end with different headlamps, bumper and vented hood, while it also revised the rear end of the coupe that gains newly shaped taillights, a bumper with a diffuser and a re-sculptured boot lid housing a ginormous wing.
