Fiat 500 Abarth Tenebra and 500 Cativa Concepts on Display in Detroit [Live Photos]

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

It may not be a standalone brand yet, as reports have suggested, but the 500 family is nevertheless expanding rapidly with five-door minivan and crossover offsoots.

That’s not to say that Chrysler’s Italian partner has left the standard, three-door 500 alone: after introducing the 160HP 500C Abarth and the all-electric 500e at LA last November, today it unveiled two design concepts at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.

Monday, December 3, 2012

If there's one thing Fiat has proven to do well in North America, is capture viewers' attention with its ads - well, at least after it learned its lesson with those out of touch commercials starring Jenifer Lopez.

Exactly a year after the Italians launched the 500 Abarth “Seduction” spot with supermodel Catrinel Menghia at the 2011 LA Auto Show, at the same event this year, Fiat released a new commercial for its 500c Abarth, which is the partially open-top version of the series.

Open Up and Say… Abarth: Fiat 500C’s Spicier 160HP Version Debuts in LA

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

The three-door 500 Abarth hatchback that is already available in the U.S. will be joined by its open-top sibling in early 2013.

Just like the hatch, the 500C Abarth that made its North American debut today at the LA Auto Show is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. Its 160HP and 155 lb-ft (210), which rise to 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) in overboost mode are enough to accelerate the sporty city car from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) “in the low seven-second range”, in Fiat’s own words.

A vast luxurious house, lots of beautiful women partying and Charlie Sheen. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Fiat decided to take advantage of the former Two and a Half Men lead, Hollywood megastar and serial troublemaker by using his “bad boy” image for its latest commercial.

The TV commercial promotes the 2012 500 Abarth, which Sheen is driving fast inside said house to the applause of his guests. Sheen rides the Abarth indoors as he wears an ankle monitor and is under house arrest – which is the name of the spot .

New Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati Convertible Heading to the Geneva Motor Show

Monday, February 20, 2012

Some three years after Fiat's Abarth division collaborated with Ferrari for the creation of the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari, the Italian company is heading to the Geneva Salon with yet another special edition of the 500 that pays homage to one of the Group's premium brands, the Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati.

Whereas the Ferrari inspired model is based on the tin-top Abarth 500, the Maserati-flavored variant is offered exclusively in convertible form, though the term is somewhat misleading as the open-top model features a canvas top that rolls back but keeps the roof rails intact – something like a huge sunroof.

The limited run Fiat Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari special may come with its own bespoke Scuderia Red finish with contrasting grey racing stripes (among other unique features) but that hasn't stopped Japanese tuner Office-K from giving it a new shade – fortunately, not permanent.

The tuning firm covered the Ferrari-branded Abarth model's body in a flashy chrome vinyl wrap with racing stripes in the colors of the Italian flag.

New Fiat 500 Abarth Priced from $22,000* in the U.S., or about as Much as a 305HP Ford Mustang…

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Just because it's tiny and made from Europe's equivalent of Chevrolet, doesn't mean that the new 160-horsepower 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth comes in cheap.

In fact, it's US$22,000 price tag (*not including destination and handling charges) is sure to raise some eyebrows.

And this not only because it costs $6,500 more than the standard 101-horsepower 500, but also because it brings it in the same price range as sports cars like the 210HP 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe ($22,250) and even the 305HP 2012 Ford Mustang V6 ($22,310)!

Fiat Group Lowers 2012 Sales Estimate by Half a Million Units

Friday, December 16, 2011

A funny t-shirt slogan reads “aim low, achieve your targets, avoid disappointment”. But it would probably be best if you didn’t give it as a Christmas present to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne.

The reason is that the Italian group has lowered its 2012 sales forecast of 2.7 million units by a substantial amount; the new target for next year is 2.2 million, 500,000 units short of the original estimate presented in the group's 5-year plan.

The good news is that its partner, Chrysler, is expected to hit its 2.4-million sales target. Adding up the numbers brings the Fiat-Chrysler combined sales projection for 2012 to 4.6 million units.

Fiat Banks on Spicy Abarth 500 Spot, Gives it the Pop-Up Treatment

Thursday, December 8, 2011

Why stop when you have a good thing going? And with some 2.2 million views on Fiat's official Youtube channel alone, we'd say the company's 500 Abarth Seduction clip starring Romanian hottie Catrinel Menghia, has been a very successful communication tool for the Italians.

Now, less than a month after the original digital spot made its internet debut, Fiat has released a so-called "pop-up" version by VH1 that incorporates some fun facts about the clip and the two protagonists that will run through the end of December.

Fiat Abarth 500 Takes on Subaru Impreza WRX STI on Italian Track [Video]

Sunday, November 27, 2011

The Abarth 500, especially when fitted with the 'essesse' performance package that lifts the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine's output to 160-horses, is a capable little beast for its size and price, but is that enough to challenge a previous generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI on the racetrack?

Well, as any driver with some experience on the circuit will tell you, it’s as much about the car as it is about the person sitting behind the wheel. That said, the Abarth 500 shouldn't come close to an STI in the right hands but it's plausible under certain circumstances.
